Indication of Ocular Prosthesis

Most of the disfigured eyes can be improved cosmetically by the use of ocular prosthesis with comfort and good ocular motility. Even disfigured eye that do not tolerate readymade or stock eyes may be fitted satisfactorily with custom designed artificial eyes . Disfigured eye with the shrunken globe are good candidates for ocular prosthesis. If the disfigured eye has normal volume either a prosthetic contact lens (in eyes with smooth corneal surface) or specially designed thin ocular prosthesis called scleral shell (for eyes with irregular corneal surface) can restore the appearance to a large extent. Below are the indiactions of the fitting ocular prosthesis or prosthetic eye

1. Phthisis bulbi (shrunken or white eye)
2. Anophthalmia following enucleation / evisceration    (surgically removed eye)
3.Congenital Disorders like Microphthalmos (small eye since birth)
